Pietro Longhi Artwork valuations, appraisals and auction estimates

(Venice, 5 November 1702 – 8 May 1785).For Longhi's work we must keep in mind the constant references to the theatrical world, and a parallel development can be traced between the painter's work and that of the playwright Goldoni, the latter , by overcoming the commedia dell'arte, creates a new type of theater inspired by real life, in the same way the artist, a painter mainly of the Venetian merchant upper class, proposes in his painting, careful observation and timely reporting of the social customs of an entire era. In 1763 he directed the Academy of drawing and carving, established by the Pisani family, then closed in 1766; his activity as a portrait painter becomes more important, in which his son Alessandro also participates. In 1763 he directed the Academy of drawing and carving, established by the Pisani family, then closed in 1766; his activity as a portrait painter becomes more important, in which his son Alessandro also participates. In 1779 he participated in the election of Antonio Canova to the Academy; on May 8, 1785, after a ten-day illness, he died from chest pain.
