Johann Carl Loth, also known as Carlotto (Munich, 1632 – Venice, 6 October 1698), was a German painter, active mainly in Italy. Son of the painter Ulrich Loth, (his mother a miniaturist) after an initial artistic training in his homeland, around 1650 he settled in Venice, where he was probably a pupil of Pietro Liberi: a particular influence on his style was the manner of another artist active in those years in the lagoon city, the Genoese Giovan Battista Langetti, trained on the examples of Bernardo Strozzi and Pieter Paul Rubens. Johann Carl Loth Biography

Johann Carl Loth, also known as Carlotto (Munich, 1632 – Venice, 6 October 1698), was a German painter, active mainly in Italy. Son of the painter Ulrich Loth, (his mother a miniaturist) after an initial artistic training in his homeland, around 1650 he settled in Venice, where he was probably a pupil of Pietro Liberi: a particular influence on his style was the manner of another artist active in those years in the lagoon city, the Genoese Giovan Battista Langetti, trained on the examples of Bernardo Strozzi and Pieter Paul Rubens. Loth also stayed in Rome, where he became acquainted with the work of Caravaggio and the Carracci. Some of his works are still present in Venetian churches (the altarpiece with the martyrdom of Saint Eugene in Santa Maria del Giglio, Transito di San Giuseppe in San Giovanni Crisostomo) and in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna (Jupiter and Mercury hosted by Philemon and Baucis and the blessing of Jacob). He painted a Samson and Dalila in the Pinacoteca Tosio Martinengo in Brescia and in the parish churches of San Felice del Benaco -Bs- (1685) and Calcinato -Bs-. Two canvases (1687-88) in the Chapel of the Crucifix in the Cathedral of Trento. At the Civic Museum of Bolzano one of his early works Drunkenness of Noah while at the Civic Museum of Padua are San Gerolamo and San Sebastiano.
