Peter Lubarda (1907 – 1974) was born in Ljubot, Montenegro in 1907 and studied painting in Paris and Belgrade. He graduated from the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris (1925) and from the Belgrade Academy of Art (1925). He lived in Belgrade from 1932 until his death, except for the years 1946 to 1950, when he served as a professor at the Herceg Novi School of Art.
Montenegro's history and scenery served as inspiration for his art. Influenced by the ways of expressionism, he painted still lifes and landscapes between the 1930s and 1940s. In the late 1940s and early 1950s he instead produced gigantic dramatic compositions on national epic and historical themes and began to experiment with abstract expressionism in the mid-1950s.
He died in 1974 in Belgrade. He is still considered the most influential figure of post-war painting in Yugoslavia.
