Gaetano Giani-Luporini (1936-2022) was born in Lucca to a family of musicians. After his first violin studies in his hometown, he moved to Florence to study at the Cherubini Conservatory. In 1968 he obtained the chair of Harmony and Counterpoint at the same Cherubini conservatory. In 1986 he left Florence to hold the role of director of the L. Boccherini Musical Institute in Lucca until 2003. Qualified among the protagonists of the musical scene of the second half of the twentieth century, his conspicuous production includes chamber, symphonic, choral and operatic music works, performed in the most important theatres, concert venues and on Italian and foreign radio broadcasters. From 1980 to 1998 he collaborated with Carmelo Bene, for whom he wrote the stage music for seven shows. An all-round artist, he simultaneously carried out an intense and appreciated activity as a painter and poet, so much so that he became an honorary member of the Accademia Lucchese of Sciences, Letters and Arts. 1
