Jean Lurçat was born in Bruyères on 1 July 1892 and became known as an innovator of modern tapestry and a producer of tapestry cardboard. He created an innovative cipher cardboard system designed in black and white with numbers corresponding to the colors. After enrolling at the Faculty of Sciences in Nancy, he interrupted his medical studies to pursue artistic ones. He was a member of the Académies de Sciences et des Beaux-Arts in France, Belgium and Portugal. His first official commission was a cartoon entitled Les Illusions d'Icare, which was woven by the Gobelins Manufactory in 1936. In 1939 he moved to Aubusson in Creuse where, with the collaboration of the weaver François Tabard, he created important works and revived the workshops of the Aubusson Manufacture. In 1945 he settled in Saint-Céré and bought a ruined castle, which he restored to make it his studio. Jean Lurçat died on 6 January 1966 in Saint-Paul-de-Vence.
