(Siena, 24 November 1898 – Rome, 16 June 1989). Born on 24 November 1898 into a family of the lower middle class of Siena. From an early age, extroverted and gifted with a lively visual intelligence, he was inclined towards free drawing with charcoal, but his father, a literature professor, tried in every way to direct him towards humanistic studies. After completing his secondary studies he enrolled at university. An interventionist like many young people of his time, he participated in the Great War at the age of just nineteen as a field artillery officer. At the end of the conflict he resumed his university studies in Siena and in 1920 he graduated in law; he began working at the lawyer Dini's office in Colle Val d'Elsa, where the family came from and where he had spent his childhood with relatives; in his free time from work he dedicates himself to his true passion: painting. It is these moments, outside of pre-established patterns, in his first attempts with painting and engraving, where he feels the need to give meaning to his life the most. This very tormented period after the First World War found in Maccari very fertile ground for his lively, mocking and polemical character, which led him both to participate in the social clashes in the country and as a non-secondary character in the March on Rome in 1922.
