(Edinburgh 1811 - Rome 1872) After studying medicine and surgery in Edinburgh, he settled in Rome in 1840 for health reasons. Having arrived in Rome as a painter, he immediately began to take an interest in photography. He uses large format negatives and his photography is characterized by long exposure times to represent Roman architecture and sculpture, ruins and landscapes in detail. His talent surpasses that of his already established compatriot James Anderson. Since 1851 he has been selling views of monuments and landscapes to tourists on the Grand Tour, and reproducing the images with a lithographic process on stone and metal of his own invention, officially patented. In 1863, he created more than three hundred plates of sculptures from the Vatican Museums which he published in albums, achieving great commercial success.
