Andreas Peter Madsen was born on 22 December 1822 in Copenhagen and was a Danish painter and archaeologist. He was the father of the art historian Karl Madsen. He attended the Danish Royal Academy of Fine Arts as a student of Eckersberg from 1835 to 1845. He concentrated on animal painting and, in 1847, exhibited a series of pictures of domestic animals outdoors. He also painted murals in the great hall of the Landbohøjskolen and in the Zoological Museum. In 1848, at the outbreak of war, Madsen joined the army as a volunteer and, over the years, became an officer. He resigned as captain at the end of 1864. Madsen died on 25 September 1911 in Copenhagen.
