Alessandro Maganza Biography
Alessandro Maganza (Vicenza, before 1556 – Vicenza, 1632) was an Italian painter, exponent of mannerism, most successful member of the Vicenza family of painters and citizen of the Republic of Venice. Son of Giovanni Battista Maganza, also an established painter and teacher, among others, of Andrea Vicentino, he was introduced to the art of painting by him from his youth, and then moved to the workshop of Giovanni Antonio Fasolo. When the latter died in 1572, he moved to Venice, following the advice of his sculptor friend Alessandro Vittoria, where he remained until 1576 and where he learned a lot from the lessons of Tintoretto and Veronese. Returning to the Berica city, he started a flourishing workshop together with his his four sons (Giovanni Battista the Younger, born in 1577, Marcantonio, born in 1578, Girolamo, born in 1586 and Vincenzo, born between 1586 and 1600). In 1584, he was also entrusted with the task of decorating the church of the hospital of San Valentino, also in Vicenza. Assisted by his thriving family workshop - in which his four sons worked - he spread numerous of his works in the Veneto cities including Verona, Brescia and Padua.
