Luigi Magli Biography

Luigi Magli was born in 1953 in Rende. In the 1970s he developed an interest in gestural and informal painting. He achieved some notoriety with his "personal expressionism" in the late 1970s and into the 1980s. In 1981, he participated in the XVI Internationalen Malerwochen at the Neu Galerie am Landesmuseum Ioanneum in Graz, Austria. He participated in other important artistic events such as the Art 13/82 in Basel, the Internationaler kunst markt in Dusseldoff and the Arco 82 in Madrid between 1982 and 1983. In 1984 he was invited to the exhibition I post-meridionali at "Di Sarro" Center in Rome. In 1986 he exhibited two solo exhibitions at the Teucher Gallery in Zurich and at the Fernando Pellegrino Gallery in Bologna. In 1987, he held his first solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in Catanzaro.
During the 1990s and 2000s, he continued to exhibit in numerous exhibitions, including the MAC Opere ed Artisti 1973-92 at the San Giovanni Monumental Complex in Catanzaro in 2005, Rooms with a View at the Ar&s gallery in Catanzaro and Mediterraneo d' Art at the Central State Archives of Rome.
Luigi Magli's work was also the subject of a RAI television documentary, "L'Animale Painted", in 1986. He also executed a pictorial cycle entitled "Arintha" in the Municipal Palace of Rende the same year. In 1995, he exhibited at the Civic Museum of Rende and in 1997 he held his second solo exhibition at the Civic Museum of Martirano.
His art, which revisits the roots of modern art, has been praised by critics such as Filiberto Menna and Enrico Crispolti. Magli has been defined as one of the major contemporary Italian artists and continues to be active both in artistic production and in cycles of personal and anthological exhibitions.
