Stefano Magnasco, born in Genoa in 1635, was a famous Italian painter and father of Alessandro Magnasco. There is not much information regarding the artist's early years of training, however it is assumed that he studied in Rome and frequented the studio of the Genoese painter Valerio Castello around 1650. Stefano Magnasco, born in Genoa in 1635, was a famous Italian painter and father of Alessandro Magnasco. There is not much information regarding the artist's early years of training, however it is assumed that he studied in Rome and frequented the studio of the Genoese painter Valerio Castello around 1650. It is thought that he stayed in Rome for around five years. During the years of his training, his painting was very technical and not very personal, in fact he was influenced by various currents and artists such as Correggio, Parmigianino and Procaccini, without however developing his own expressive style. In the painting "Pietà", however, Magnasco is inspired by the works of Antoon Van Dyck. Later, with the painting "Passage of the Red Sea", his predilection for the painting of Grechetto was evident, before finally returning to the teachings of Castello in the painting "Adoration of the Magi". Stefano Magnasco died in Genoa around 1673.
