Fernand Maillaud was born in 1852 in Mouhet, located in the Indre. Since he was little, he began working alongside local artisans and farmers and this brought out his passion for drawing. He attended the École des Beaux-Arts under Adolphe Yvon and his first creative works as an artist were illustrations. As a member of the Salon of French Artists, he was part of the group of impressionist and symbolist painters founded in 1891 by Paul Gauguin. Fernand Maillaud's artistic work is characterized by a wide variety of subjects: he drew domestic animals, the rural and urban world and depicted men and women engaged in daily work. Maillaud created works depicting interiors, portraits and exotic landscapes inspired by his travels. Furthermore, he created a large quantity of designs for the furniture he sculpted himself and for the tapestries. Finally, Fernand Maillaud died in Paris in 1948.
