Robert Mallet-Stevens (Paris, 24 March 1886 – Paris, 8 February 1945) was a French architect and designer. He graduated from the École spéciale d'architecture in Paris in 1910. After having been a furniture designer and film set designer (for example in L'inhumaine) for about twenty years, he undertook a career as an architect in the mid-1920s, for an exclusively private clientele, apart from the creation of only one fire station in Paris. He was among the founders of the Union des Artistes modernis (UAM) in 1929, together with Francis Jourdain, René Herbst and others. The movement was firmly in opposition to the decorativism of Art Nouveau and proposed a purity of lines and forms that merged into the international modern movement. During the Vichy regime he took refuge with his family in the south-east of France, in Penne-d'Agenais (Lot-et-Garonne). The importance of his work as an architect was recognized only after his death, by which time most of his works had been left abandoned (such as Villa Cavrois).
