Gregory Pavlovich Maltzeff was a Russian painter born in Nizhny Novgorod on 27 November 1881 and passed away in 1953 in Spoleto. He began his artistic training at the Nizhny Novgorod River Academy at just 16 years old, as an official pupil. In 1913 he won the Prix de Rome, a prize that allowed him to study in Rome. Due to the First World War and the subsequent October Revolution of 1917, Maltzeff had to remain in Rome and undertake freelance work due to the suspension of his salary by the Academy. Thus he began to deal with sacred art and in 1930-31 he received a commission from the Vatican to execute all the paintings for the church of Sant'Antonio Abate all'Esquilino and an iconostasis for the Russicum summer seminar located on the island of 'Elba. Maltzeff died in Spoleto in 1953.
