He approaches painting and then abandons it in a polemical manner. He made his debut in the world of comics at the end of the sixties as the author of erotic detective stories in the Genius series. The erotic-sexy trend continues with the character of the corsair Jolanda de Almaviva, published by Renzo Barbieri and Giorgio Cavedon's RG. After some works created for the world of very young people (Il Corriere deiRagazzi, 1974) Manara begins prestigious collaborations. expand multimedia communication, its activity has diversified, also orienting itself towards the creation of cartoons for advertising campaigns and contributions for the Internet. In (1989) he designed the cover of Enzo Avitabile's dissident album Stella. Finally, in 1996 the creation of the first CD-ROM on one of his stories, Gulliveriana, followed – 1997 – by Il gioco del Kamasutra. At the beginning of the 21st century he created, among other things, Three Girls in the Network, Escape from Piranesi and Quarantasei, a story which sees Valentino Rossi as the protagonist. In the same period he began a collaboration with DC Comics for its sub-label Vertigo, creating the story of Desire for the project The Sandman Endless Nights. In 2008 he created an advertisement for Permaflex mattresses. Starting in 2004 he designed The Borgias, based on a story by Alejandro Jodorowsky, of which three volumes were published in Italy by Mondadori. .
