Angelo Mangiarotti Biography

Angelo Mangiarotti (Milan, 26 February 1921 – Milan, 30 June 2012) was an Italian architect, designer, urban planner and teacher. He is one of the most important figures in the field of architecture and urban planning, especially Italian and American (but also Japanese and European), as well as internationally recognized as one of the most influential designers of the 20th century and among the most relevant figures in drawing Italian industrialist. In addition to his main activities, Mangiarotti is also famous as a sculptor (a passion for sculpture which influenced him greatly in his last 20 years of career as a designer), as well as for being one of the founders of the ADI - Association for the Industrial Design: the oldest and most important body linked to industrial design. He has received several awards both in Italy and in other countries and has contributed to many important Italian furniture companies, but also automotive companies such as Alfa Romeo. In addition to his collaboration with other important names in international architecture, he has combined his profession as a designer with intense international teaching activity. He had a vision of architecture as a practical, sober and functional art; industrial design, influenced by sculpture, was for Mangiarotti an expression of the craftsman's skill on the material but never to the detriment of function.
