Adrien Manglard was born on March 10, 1695 in the city of Lyon and died on August 1, 1760 in Rome. Manglard was a pupil of Adriaen Van der Cabel. He was also greatly inspired by Salvator Rosa from whom he borrowed the powerful chiaroscuro. On 27 May 1734, he was admitted to the Royal Academy. He then specialized in marine painting. He exhibited for the first time in 1736 in a "collection" of San Giovanni Decollato. He received orders from many great families of the time in Rome including: Rospigliosi, Colonna, Pamphili and also from Philip of Bourbon, Duke of Parma. The latter commissioned him, in 1757, one hundred paintings of landscapes and coastal views for his palaces in Parma and Colorno. The painter lived for almost 50 years in Italy and died there in 1760 in Rome.
