Henri Charles Manguin Biography

Henri Charles Manguin was born on March 23, 1874 in Paris and attended Gustave Moreau's atelier at the School of Fine Arts in Paris, together with Matisse, Rouault and Marquet. In 1902, Manguin exhibited for the first time at the Salon of Independents and in 1904 he was invited by Paul Signac to visit Saint Tropez. Here, the artist was seduced by the light and landscapes enough to buy a house in 1920. A few years later, Manguin exhibited at the legendary Salon d'Automne which marked the birth of Fauvism, a movement to which he remained faithful throughout his career. Manguin painted primarily female figures, particularly women sleeping or bathing. His work is characterized by the desire to communicate his emotions, favoring the use of colors for the happiness they arouse in the observer. His art is represented in permanent collections at the Pushkin Museum in Moscow, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, among other major institutions around the world.
Henri Charles Manguin died on 25 September 1949 in Saint-Tropez.
