Daniel Mann Biography
Daniel Mann (1912 - 1991) was an American director active in films from 1952 to 1978. Mann arrived in Hollywood in the early 1950s. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he attended Erasmus Hall High School, the Professional Children's School of New York and the Neighborhood Playhouse. He entered cinema in 1952 as a director and was known for his excellent ear for dialogue. Most of Mann's films are theatrical (Come Back Little Sheba, The Rose Tattoo, The Teahouse of the August Moon, Hot Spell) and literary (Butterfield 8, The Last Angry Man) adaptations. Originally trained as an actor by Sanford Meisner, between 1952 and 1987 he directed over 31 feature films. Considered a true "actor's director", his seven shows were nominated for an Oscar and two won the Tony Award. He has collaborated with actors such as Burt Lancaster, Shirley Booth, Susan Hayward, Marlon Brando, Elizabeth Taylor, Dean Martin and Anthony Quinn. It has been nominated for several awards, including two Palme d'Or, three Directors Guild of America Awards and a Golden Bear.
