Pavel Andreevitch Mansurov (1896 - 1983) was born in 1896 in St. Petersburg. From 1909 to 1911 he studied in St. Petersburg at the Institute of Technical Drawing directed by Baron Stieglitz. From 1912 to 1915 he attended the School of Design at the Society of Encouragement for Fine Arts in St. Petersburg. In 1915 he joined the Imperial Aviation Unit and became a designer at the Fontanka technical office under the command of the Army. During this period, until 1917, he exhibited his first fundamental group of abstract drawings which would then influence all his exhibitions. In August 1928 he traveled to Italy and spent most of his time in Rome. Then in Paris, he stayed with the Delaunay family, met Picasso and his works in the Russian period. In 1957 he participated in the exhibition “50 years of abstract painting” at the Galerie Creuze in Paris and in “Abstract Art of the First Generations: 1910/1939” at the Musée d'Art et Industrie in St. Etienne. During these years, 1959-1960, Mansurov was constantly invited to participate in exhibitions of both abstract art and avant-garde Russian art. From 1973 to 1975 Mansurov was invited to important exhibitions including: “Mansouroff. Quelques Nouvelles Formules Picturales” at 25 Avenue Torville, Paris, “Vor der Flache zum raum”, and “Die 20er Jahre in Osteuropa”, both at the Galerie Gmurzynska in Cologne and in 1977 he participated in the Other important exhibitions of 1980 are: “Die Kunst Osteuropas in 20 Jahrhundert” at the Bochum Museum, “The avant-garde in Russia 1910-1930. New Perspectives” at the County Museum of Los Angeles and at the Hirshhorn Museum, Sculpture Garden in Washington DC
