Carlo Maratta, sometimes also known as Carlo Maratti, was born in Camerano on 15 May 1625. He was a renowned painter and restorer, whose influence on Italian and particularly Roman painting was significant during the second half of the seventeenth century. Roman painting between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries was characterized by the struggle between classicism and baroque, but Maratta managed to reconcile these two apparently opposite tendencies, fusing Raphael's classical approach with the baroque, without rhetorical excesses. In fact, during his life, he often received praise and recognition as the greatest painter of the time, also influencing the artistic productions of the following century. Maratta was not only a painter but also a well-known restorer of pictorial works, including Raphael's frescoes in the Villa Farnesina and the Vatican Rooms in 1702, as well as those in the Annibale Carracci Gallery in Palazzo Farnese. Maratta died in Rome on 15 December 1713.
