Pierre Amédée Marcel-beronneau Biography

Pierre Amédée Marcel-Béronneau was born on 14 July 1869 in Bordeaux. At the age of twenty, he enrolled at the Municipal School of Fine Arts of Bordeaux and, from 1890, he attended the National School of Decorative Arts before being admitted to Gustave Moreau's studio in 1892. He made his debut at the Salon of French Artists in 1895 and from there his artistic career began. Part of his work followed an academic production, for which he received public commissions, while the second part was influenced by his teacher Gustave Moreau, taking up his themes and style. He preferred to paint mythical and biblical female characters, "femme fatales" and legendary heroines who evolve into intriguing ornamental decorations that Marcel-Béronneau created thanks to a masterfully elaborate pictorial material. He was named Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1914 and participated in numerous exhibitions abroad. Marcel-Béronneau died on 13 January 1937 in La Seyne-sur-Mer.
