Carlo Maria Mariani Biography

Carlo Maria Mariani (1931-2021) was born in Rome in 1931 and during his life, he divided his time between the city and New York. Towards the mid-1970s, Mariani surpassed his hyperrealist style and exhibited a series of "copies" of "classical" and "neoclassical" works by Mengs, David, Hayez and Appiani interpreted in a highly conceptual key. The complicated construction of his cultured poetics is the objective of the imitative process. In fact, the Roman artist was one of the protagonists of the "cultured painting" of the 1980s, in clear contrast with the transavantgarde. Mariani's prolific artistic production is demonstrated by numerous exhibitions, among which it is worth mentioning those of 1975 at the Cannaviello Gallery in Rome, as well as some solo exhibitions at the Gian Enzo Sperone Gallery in New York. He took part in the 1984 Venice Biennale, in the Mirror Art section curated by Maurizio Calvesi, and brought some works to the Rome Quadrennials in 1986 and 1992. Mariani studied figuration while simultaneously dedicating himself to a relevant documentary examination. Mariani has exhibited in the most prestigious institutions, including those in New York, the Center Pompidou in Paris and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo.1
