Cesare Mariani Biography

Cesare Mariani was born on 13 January 1826 in Rome. From 1842 to 1850 he attended the Accademia di San Luca under the guidance of the painter Tommaso Minardi and made his debut at the Promotrice in Rome in 1850 with genre paintings and small views. In this period, Mariani also created drawings of Lazio landscapes and female figures that reveal his attention to purist artistic currents, both French and German. However, the artist did not limit himself to these influences but also used the ways of Francesco Hayez in the series of drawings of commoners in costume dating between 1855 and 1860.
In addition to painting, Mariani also dedicated himself to the frescoes of numerous churches and palaces in Rome, Lazio, Umbria, Marche and Abruzzo. In 1863 he was appointed academician of San Luca and from that moment on he received numerous official awards. He was elected city councilor on 24 November 1870, became a member of the Academies of Fine Arts of Perugia and Florence and finally was part of the superior board of Fine Arts of the Ministry of Public Education. Cesare Mariani died in Rome on 21 February 1901.
