Elio Mariano Biography
Elio Mariani (1943 - ) was born in 1943 and is considered the surreal-conceptual artist of Mec Art, an artistic movement that developed in France and subsequently in Italy, in the second half of the sixties, supported by the critic Pierre Restany. The term, short for mechanical-art, indicates an art based on mechanical image reproduction procedures, especially photographic transfers, which prefers the use of elements extracted from popular press. The leaders of the movement are above all Gianni Bertini and Mimmo Rotella; in France Alain Jacquet, Pol Bury Nikos, Serge Bèguier participate, in Italy Aldo Tagliaferro, Elio Mariani, Elisa Magri, Bruno di Bello. Compared to American pop art, it is marked by a greater intention to re-signify media images. In 1965 and 1972 he was invited to the Quadrennial in Rome. The publication, entitled Atomic Bomb, which accompanies the artist's solo exhibition at the Galleria Santandrea in Milan, dates back to 1971; in 1973 a monograph with a critical text by Pierre Restany was presented in Milan. His works are in the collections of the Mart of Rovereto, all from the period 1970-1971.
