Henry Markò was a painter born in Florence in 1855, famous for his highly sensitive landscape and marine works. Influenced by nineteenth-century painting, Markò stood out for his skillful scenic scenes, including rare seascapes of the Ligurian Riviera, detailed woodland landscapes animated by human figures, and views of cities such as Rome, Genoa and Florence. Based primarily in Tuscany, Markò worked in Florence with Andrea Markò and Carlo Markò the younger, in the landscape school founded by his father Carlo Markò the elder. This school represented the most advanced pictorial instances of the era before the advent of the Tuscan Macchiaioli movement. In the final part of his artistic career, Henry Markò moved permanently to Liguria, to Lavagna, where he preferred a local landscape. Markò died in 1921.
