Henri Martin was born in Toulouse on 5 August 1860. He studied at the Academy of Art in Toulouse, attending the lessons of Jules Garipuy. He later moved to Paris, where he fully entered the École des Beaux-Arts and studied with Jean-Paul Laurens. In 1855, Martin traveled to Italy, where he discovered the paintings of Giotto, the paintings of the Macchiaioli and Tranquillo Cremona. Back in France, after the trip to Italy, Ernest Laurent and Aman-Jean introduced him to Seurat's post-impressionist painting, although Martin continued to work with an impressionist technique. Fascinated by pointillist and neo-impressionist techniques, Martin combined the solid compositional structure of his academic background with the revolutionary neo-impressionist "dot" technique. In the Rosicrucian Salon of 1890, Martin exhibited many works of symbolic subjects and participated in regional exhibitions of impressionism held in Munich, Vienna and Brussels. Martin died on 12 November 1943 in Labastide-du-Vert in France.
