Giuseppe Mascarini Biography

Giuseppe Mascarini was born in Bologna to Milanese parents on 11.17.1877 and died in Milan on 11.3.1954. After classical studies at the "Silvio Pellico" college in Legnano, in 1895 he enrolled at the Brera Academy in Milan. Giuseppe Mentessi for perspective, Vespasiano Bignami and Filippo Carcano for the figure are his professors at the Academy. Naturally gifted for drawing and painting, he won prizes in 1896 and 1897 when he participated for the first time in the Brera exhibitions. In 1900 the Academy appointed him "Honorary Member" and he was later called to be part of the permanent painting commission . The first years of the century saw him in Paris, where he studied and admired the painting of the great masters of the past and followed with great interest the new pictorial trends that advanced in the climate of general renewal brought by the new century. Influences of themes such as symbolism and divisionism can be found in his paintings of the first decades of the twentieth century. The large canvases "Il Sogno" 1909, "La Visitatrice" 1909, "Danzatrice" 1913, "Ballata Antica" 1916 and the large Alpine landscapes where the tripartition of horizons, divisionism, the skies that lead towards infinity belong to this period visual perception, bring back reminiscences of Puvis de Chevannes, Hodler and Segantini. In 1912, a portrait of Bice Grubicy and a profile of a child were exhibited at the "Salon" in Paris. He exhibited at the international Venice Biennials starting from 1900.
