Paolo Masi Biography

Paolo Masi was born in Florence in 1933. From his initial experiences of informal painting and concrete abstraction he moved on to an articulated, complex and diversified activity on a technical-linguistic level. In the 1960s his programmatic and theoretical activity was expressed for Masi with participation in collectives and groups, and is always closely linked to an uninterrupted and continuous experimentation on the way of operating and transforming the material: for the Florentine artist, work is something always in progress, which from time to time opens up to new insights and new solutions. Since 1974 Masi has been co-founder together with Maurizio Nannucci and Mario Mariotti of a collective that manages the non-profit space of Zona in Florence, a space that has the aim of disseminating national and international artistic experiences. This experience will then find its continuation starting from 2000 in the Base collective. The works of his most recent production are the Containers of color form, the Serialità and again the Cartoons, that is, surfaces of various types (wood, canvas, paper) on which the artist intervenes with a complex pictorial operation. The artist lives and works in Florence.
