Benedict Masson (1819-1893) is a French painter born in Sombernon near. He specializes in the painting of mythological compositions, allegorical subjects, genre scenes, portraits, flowers and wall frescoes. He was a pupil of the Lyonnais painter Paul Chenavart, but above all of Paul Delaroche, from whom he received his training. Although little known, Masson was present almost every year at the Salon, from 1840 until 1881. During the Second Empire, he was chosen to paint a large mural for the Hôtel des Invalides, illustrating the life of Charlemagne. He died in Paris in 1893.
