Giuseppe Mastellaro Biography
Giuseppe Mastellaro was born in Piove di Sacco in 1903. In the years between 1920 and 1930, he was appreciated for his artistic mastery, despite the cultural difficulties and the few economic resources of the rural context in which he lived. Mastellaro decides to move to Lombardy, to Sesto San Giovanni, both because of the fascist persecution suffered in Piove di Sacco, and to work at Breda, where he can find greater job opportunities in the artistic field. However, the outbreak of the Second World War made his already precarious condition even more difficult. In this period, Mastellaro was inspired by Da Molin's lesson, trying to grasp the distinctive features of the daily life of the characters he meets on the street and of the landscapes that surround him. In particular, he focuses on the search for physiognomic traits in the faces of particularly interesting people or on the architectural details of Milan. After the 60s and 70s, he returned more and more often to his hometown, Chioggia and Comacchio, where he created views that reflect the intimacy and smells of the places. Despite his shyness and lack of academic education, Mastellaro was awarded a gold medal by President Sandro Pertini in 1976 for his artistic merits.
