(Modena, 1911 – Parma, 1994). In 1925 his family moved from Modena to Parma, where the painter resided permanently throughout his life. He trained at the Art Institute and began his artistic activity, with ways that harked back to the experience of Giorgio Morandi. Mattioli's painting is a surface painting, without action, a wall material worn out by a thousand touches of the brush , is the artist moving away and getting closer to the canvas, until the right tones are found to be perceived at any distance, with a relative mutation of perception like a recourse to impressionist ideas, even if the material body is, in general, thicker and solid. The pictorial technique is, for Mattioli, one with the image, each support used is the result of a careful selection, it can be a simple canvas, a worn and juxtaposed board used precisely for special imperfections or for that time which has worn it out and stripped of its grain and knots, it could be the bound cover of an old book, faded archive sheets with ancient annotations; all this to accentuate that coming from afar of painting, of forms, of thought, to tell us that we are young for a short time and that we immediately enter the path of history, first the individual one and then the more general one, that our existence cannot be without memory. It is almost as if he wanted his work to already be ancient, even with a modern touch.
