Self-taught painter, since he was a boy Gianni Mattò loved drawing scenes of sea life: fish, boats, fishermen. Starting from the 1960s, his instinctive and almost primitive painting captures the soul and sensations of the traditional slaughter, to which the small and geometric white houses of Favignana sometimes act as a backdrop, giving the spectator works of unparalleled intensity. The color choices that turn to black and red give greater drama to the scene of the tuna fishery which is configured as a struggle for survival, an instinctive battle between man and nature, between man and the sea. At the end of the 80s, Salvatore Fiume accidentally discovered the innate artistic talent of Gianni Mattò. He then decided to have his first exhibition set up in an art gallery in Milan, giving the painter from Favigna well-deserved fame at a national level. Salvatore Fiume also involved him in his fascinating Alleanze Pictoriche project, through which he intended to enhance, through a collaboration, an alliance, young and talented contemporary artists.
