Almir Mavignier, Almir da Silva Mavignier, was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1925. After graduating from high school in 1946, he studied painting with Árpád Szenès in Rio de Janeiro. From 1946 to 1951 he collaborated as director and co-founder of the painting studio of the Centro Nacional Psiquiatrico Pedro II, in Engenho de Dentro in Rio de Janeiro. In 1949 he painted his first abstract painting and held his first solo exhibition in 1951 at the Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo. He subsequently moved to Paris in 1951, dedicating himself to concrete art and creating point paintings from 1954 and grid structures from 1955. From 1956 he created his optical art paintings and from 1957 he also painted monochromatic paintings. In 1958 he began collaborating with the artists of the "Zero" group and founded his own studio in Ulm. Since 1958 he has also worked as a freelance commercial artist, creating more than 200 cultural and art posters. In 1968 he opened a new studio in Hamburg and in the same year he participated in the 4th Documenta in Kassel for the second time. Almir Mavignier is internationally known as an artist representing concrete art and optical art.
