Fernando Mazzocca is a well-known scholar of Italian art from the neoclassical age, the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. After training at the Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa, he taught at the Ca' Foscari University of Venice and the State University of Milan. He has published numerous volumes and organized important exhibitions since 1978, including those on Neoclassicism and nineteenth-century Italy.
In addition to art history, he has also studied the history of collecting, art literature and the relationships between the arts and literature and music. He paid particular attention to the cases of Alfieri, Manzoni and Verdi. He has curated the layout of several modern art galleries in Italy, including those in Palermo, Milan and Naples.
Mazzocca is a member of several organizations, including the National Committee for the Publishing of the Works of Antonio Canova and the Research Institute for Studies on Canova and Neoclassicism. He is also a member of the Veneto Institute of Sciences, Letters and Arts in Venice and a member of the Scientific Council of the Italian Encyclopedia.
Since 1988, he has collaborated with the Sunday supplement of Il Sole 24ore as an art history expert.
