Giuseppe Mazzuoli was a Baroque sculptor, born in Siena in 1644 and died in Rome in 1725. He learned the art of sculpture from his older brother, Giovanni Antonio, who was probably originally from Volterra. He subsequently perfected his technique in Rome, where he collaborated with other famous artists. One of his most famous works was “La Carità”, sculpted for the tomb of Alexander VII in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, commissioned by GL Bernini.
He is considered one of the most important Baroque sculptors of his hometown, Siena, where he created many significant works of art. In his late works he showed a predilection for lilting rhythms and more classical forms. An example of this style can be seen in “The Death of Cleopatra”, located in the gardens of the Lisbon Hospital.
