Paolo Mei (1831 - 1900) was an Italian painter active mainly in Rome and Lazio. He studied initially at the Accademia di San Luca and later at the studio of the artist Tommaso Minardi. Starting from the 1960s he received multiple artistic commissions including the frescoes in the Chapel of the Guardian Angel in the Church of Santa Maria in Aquiro and in the Chapel of the Crucifix in the Church of Santa Lucia del Gonfalone. One of his few and perhaps first research works also dates back to those years: "The embroiderer", a painting where he puts Tommaso Minardi's realist lesson into practice, both in the setting and in the figure.
