Gino Meloni Biography

(Varese, 1905 – Lissone, 1989). Born in Varese, from 1923 to 1927 he was a student of Arturo Martini at ISIA in Monza. He then attended the Brera Academy in Milan where he followed Ambrogio Alciati's courses. In the 1930s he was in Lissone, a city to which he remained linked, in the province of Brianza, where he taught in the local School of Arts and Crafts and dedicated himself to painting with ways that initially refer to the nineteenth-century tradition and in particular to Lombard landscape painting, and then instead follow a more decidedly anti-academic path. He was responsible for the initiative of the Lissone Prize in the years 1946 - 1967. In 1956 and 1964 the Venice Biennale significantly dedicated a personal room to him. These are the years in which his research now turns to informal solutions. He exhibits in Leverkusen in 1957, in New York in 1960 and in Paris in 1963. Other exhibitions in the following fifteen years in Switzerland, Austria, Belgium (and again Germany) During the 1970s the artist returned decisively to the figure, inserting collages and fragments derived from everyday reality into his paintings.
