Francesco Mennhey Biography

Francesco Mennyey was born in Turin on 7 February 1889 and died in the same city on 15 October 1950. He studied at the Albertina Academy and then became a teacher of art and engraving techniques in the Professional School for Graphic Arts in Turin. Mennyey began painting in 1914 and, after the First World War, he also devoted himself to engraving, using the techniques of etching, aquatint and drypoint, producing over 250 works. He worked in France, Holland and Turkey, representing the Italian Government as a military attaché. During his prolonged stays abroad he painted lands and seascapes with colors of an unusual brightness. Subsequently, Mennyey retired to Turin continuing to work on etching, creating works that portrayed the squares of Turin and the architecture of Venice. Mennyey used to make small sketches in pencil or charcoal and then portray the subject from life in his studio. Before completing his paintings, he often returned to the location to capture the light and fix the colors. Francesco Mennyey died on 15 October 1950 in Turin.
