MERCADANTE, Biagio. – He was born in Torraca (in the province of Salerno) on 12 May 1892. From 1905 he attended the institute of fine arts in Naples, under the guidance of V. Volpe, and the evening school of black and white nude art, where he was one of last students of M. Cammarano. From his teachings he learned the sensitivity for half tones and, also looking at the pictorial work of D. Morelli and A. Mancini, he learned the rich possibilities of modulation of black and white. Ripa recalls that, while still a boy, he was "taken by the police" to be rewarded at the royal palace for having brilliantly painted a portrait of Vittorio Emanuele III.
