Ivan Meštrović was born in 1883 and dedicated himself to sculpture, studying in Split, Vienna, and Paris. Some critics see the influence of twentieth-century avant-gardes, particularly the Viennese Secession, in his formation. He became well-known in the 1920s with monumental works dedicated to fallen soldiers, busts, and religious pieces. His work reveals an expressiveness reminiscent of classical Greek sculpture. He passed away in South Bend, Indiana, United States in 1962. Despite developing his artistic career during the Kingdom of Yugoslavia and the Tito era, and dying in the US, Ivan Meštrović remains a key figure in the Croatian cultural context.
