Pietro Michis was born in Milan in 1834. He attended high school before studying at the Brera Academy under the guidance of Giuseppe Bertini, from whom he learned the Macchiaioli way of painting and then in Venice. After completing his studies, he returned to Milan where he began to exhibit annually at the Academy and at the Promotrici of Turin and Genoa from 1861. In 1868 he married the painter Maria Cattaneo, with whom he also dedicated himself to genre painting. One of his works that won the Mylius prize in Brera is "A civil marriage in a village" in 1868. In 1880, he became a teacher at the Civic painting school in Pavia and taught until he was retired in 1900 in due to an eye disease and his outdated teaching methods. Michis died in 1903. Among his most important works are "Zeusis choosing a model" with which he won the canonica competition and is currently preserved in Brera, "The thugs of Charles V who plunder the tomb of Julius II" at the Civic Museum of Turin, "The Spouses", "Cornelio", "Agrippa", "Leo
