Born and raised in Hollywood, he was in the right place at the right time to start his film career. In 1947 he went to Sun Valley, Idaho, to perfect his skiing technique. Two years later, while teaching skiing to a couple of young Bell & Howell executives, he combined his skiing and filmmaking talents after convincing the couple to lend him a camera to photograph local skiers. Miller's first feature film, titled "Deep and Light," was produced on a shoestring budget of about $500. By touring with the film and providing a personal narrative, he established a tradition that is now synonymous with his name. In addition to being a member of the Ski Hall of Fame, Miller has been honored with numerous awards for his accomplishments, including 10 CINE Golden Eagles, eight IFPA awards, the prestigious International Documentary Achievement Award, and the US Ski Writers Association's Golden Quill Award .
