Igor Mitoraj Biography

Igor Mitoraj (pronounced / 'igor mi'tɔraj /; Oederan, 26 March 1944 – Paris, 6 October 2014) was a Polish sculptor.

After studying painting at the Kraków Academy of Arts and the Kraków Academy of Arts under Tadeusz Kantor, he participated in several group exhibitions and received his first solo exhibition in 1967 at the Krzysztofory Gallery in Poland. In 1968 he moved to Paris to continue his artistic studies. Soon after, he became fascinated with Latin American art and culture and decided to spend a year painting and traveling in Mexico. This experience brought him closer to sculpture. He returned to Paris in 1974 and two years later had another solo exhibition at the La Hune Gallery, which included some sculptures. The success of the exhibition led him to dedicate himself to sculpture. After a trip to Carrara in 1979, he began working in terracotta and bronze, before deciding to dedicate himself to working with marble. In 1983 he opened a studio in Pietrasanta.
