Giovan Battista Mitri Biography

Giovanni Battista Mitri, known as Giobatta, was born in San Vito al Tagliamento, in the province of Pordenone, in 1915. Having graduated from the Carmini Art Institute in Venice, he completed his training at the Academy of Fine Arts, a student of Arturo Martini. He began his activity as a ceramist at the "Scala" factory in Pordenone and in the 1940s opened his own kiln in Calle della Madonnella 5139 in Venice, called "Mitri Ceramiche". Refined animalier, he suspended his production during the war years and dedicated himself to teaching at the Istituto Statale d'Arte of Venice and then rekindled the ovens of his laboratory in 1947. In the 1950s he created a production inspired by the archaicist suggestions that over the years evolve into neocubist solutions. Giobatta Mitri died in Venice in 2000.
