He was born in Turin in 1915. He began taking photographs in 1928, following in the footsteps of his father Carlo Emilio, owner of the Artistic and Industrial Photography atelier since 1925. Since 1930 he has been a member of the "Società Fotografica Subalpina". In the years between the two wars, his photographs were published in the Luci ed Ombre yearbooks, a point of reference for the most advanced photographic research in Italy: Moncalvo highlights in his images a "new" eye which, although linked to a romantic expression, tends to essential geometry of the sign. He is among the first to create professional color photographic prints in Italy. His collaboration with the architect Carlo Mollino is historic. He successfully participates in competitions all over the world: in FIAF statistics from 1956 to 1968, he was granted the honor of EFIAP in 1957. In 1988 he was appointed Master of Italian Photography by FIAF.
