Jean Baptiste Monnoyer Biography
Monnoyer Jean Baptiste (Lille 1636-London 1699) was a French painter. Trained in Antwerp, where he came under the influence of D. de Heem, he then specialized in flower painting. Returning to France (ca. 1655) he was largely active for the nobility (Paris, Hôtels Lambert and Lauzun; Vaux-le-Vicomte, castle) and the court (at Vincennes, Saint-Cloud, Versailles, Marly). In this field he achieved great success for the sumptuously decorative style of his still lifes of flowers, fruits, precious objects and fabrics, silverware (Flowers, fruits and art objects, 1665, Montpellier, Musée Fabre), which combine Flemish sensitivity for the color and the sumptuous detail with the opulent taste of the Italian baroque still life. From 1685 he was active in England (London, Montagu House; Kensington, Royal Palace).
