Nicolas-André Monsiau was born in Paris in 1754. His artistic training began under the guidance of master Jean-François-Pierre Peyron, at the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture in Paris. Thanks to the fortunate discovery of a patron, the Marquis de Corberon, the young Monsiau was able to visit Rome, enriching his artistic culture. Having returned to Paris at the end of 1780, he was unable to exhibit his work at the Royal Academy, but he did not want to miss the opportunity to demonstrate his talent, so he participated in the Salons de la Correspondence exhibition of 1781, presenting one of his paintings. Although his original stylistic inclination was that of neoclassicism, to which he remained faithful for at least a decade, Monsiau was one of the first artists of David's generation to dedicate himself to the depiction of modern historical subjects. Although he created various works of portraiture and genre scenes, the artist expressed his art for the last time at the Salon of 1833, four years before his death in Paris on 31 May 1837.
