A. Montagna Biography
Angiolo Montagna was born in 1920 in Cornedo Vicentino. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna under the guidance of Giorgio Morandi and Virgilio Guidi. In 1947 he graduated in Venice with the help of Bruno Saetti and exhibited for the first time in Vicenza in 1945. In 1951 he was one of the founders of the "Caliban" group, which aimed to bring contemporary European culture to Vicenza . Montagna was very active as an exhibitor in situations such as the Venice National Youth Exhibition and the Auronzo Prize in 1947, the Nuoro Prize and the Verona Biennale in 1959, the Turin Prize and the San Marino International in the early 1960s, and the Modigliani Prize in Livorno, the Michetti Prize in Francavilla, and the Verona Biennale in 1963. He also held solo exhibitions in several galleries, including the "Il Canale" Gallery in Venice in 1963 and the Ghelfi Gallery in Vicenza in 1970. Montagna has also created mosaics, stained glass windows and wall decorations for public and religious buildings in Italy and abroad, such as the stained glass windows and furnishings for the parish churches of Cornedo, Spagnago, Ponte dei Nori, Arzignano, Valdagno, Zanè, Bassano, Vicenza, Pordenone, Venice and Reggio Emilia. He painted a large painting for the beatification of Blessed Father Salvatore Lilli in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome in 1982, and the sketches for the stained glass windows of the ancient church of the Primate in Tabgha in the Holy Land in 1983. He taught drawing at the VE State Institute Marzotto, at the Middle School and the Artistic High School of Valdagno and also directed the Marzotto School of Painting. Montagna died in Cornedo on 25 January 1998.
