(Florence, 22 July 1906 – Rome, 7 January 1998) Born in Florence to Stefano and Maria Cianchi. In 1925, during one of his frequent visits to the Uffizi, he accidentally met and got to know the painter Maurice Denis. In the same year he made his first stay in France. In 1927 he enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence and began his artistic and emotional bond with Felice Carena, his painting teacher. He immediately demonstrated a great love for the classics and the masters of the nineteenth century, from Courbet to Paul Cézanne and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Four years later he obtained a diploma in painting from the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence and made his second trip to Europe. He visits Holland twice where he renews his interest in Rubens, Van Gogh and Rembrandt. He joins the Roman School (twentieth century) together with which he exhibits at the "La Cometa" Gallery in Rome. He meets Corrado Cagli, Giuseppe Capogrossi, Afro Basaldella, Mirko Basaldella, Emanuele Cavalli, Alberto Ziveri and Mario Mafai. He became friends with Emilio Villa, Guido Piovene and Alfonso Gatto. The following year, at the end of the war, he founded, together with Pericle Fazzini, Enrico Prampolini, Joseph Jarema and Virgilio Guzzi, the Art Club with headquarters in via Margutta 53. He met and frequents Lionello Venturi, who returned to Italy after exile during the fascist period.
